Not sure if it would work for your specific application, but I had a similar problem and I bought the at-home soil test kits.
My specific area was too high in nitrates and phosphates (IIRC) so I literally dug out a foot of soil x 4' section, relevelled and put grass on top. It mated with the old grass perfectly.
