It's the whole "I know you are but what am I' response. You can't totally get out of the narrative but you can change the way it is presented.

Once you engage in the banter, it's over. They've won.

For example, when a leftist calls you a racist, it's a smear in 2019, but 100 years ago, it meant something entirely different. When you say "no YOU are the racist", you are ceding their definition of the word in question. They win, because what's important is the frame (racism = what they want it to mean). Whether or not you successfully defend yourself, they will now use this word on anyone else, and it's ability to end and an actual discussion and begin a defensive argument is greater than before.

It's hard to see this now, because they've dominated that word (racism) for so long, but you could try it with other words too and see how easy it is to do, and also how easy it is to avoid. You cannot win by engaging it. You have to immediately deny their frame by not engaging.

In regards to the word "Racist", it has lost almost all of it's power because it has been used so much and the majority of the time for things that didn't warrant it. I still don't fully agree with ignoring or not engaging. I also feel that if you do this, they will think they have control over you but I do think this strategy should be used whenever someone says they are going to boycott a state, store, entertainer, etc. Don't engage or reply, in the end, not that much will be lost. Just my opinion.

this is simply not true. our entire education system and scientific apparatus is based on precisely the opposite of this idea.

i agree there are diplomatic ways to address these dynamics. for example, a group of lefties all worked up over reparations is probably not the best time to bring out this list. you'll be visiting the er in short order
