Facts and reason are very potent, I've recently heard someone propose that much of the west's success is based on developing and adopting a systematic approach for finding truth. Basically the scientific method. I don't know if that's really the reason for this period of relative success, but it seems plausible. I think it's important to note that facts and logic are not enough in and of themselves.
