Also, teacher pay has very little effect upon student scores. Parental involvement, student motivation, high expectations, and curriculum are critical.
Teacher motivation is important, but it is a combination of work environment, student conduct, student motivation, work load, and pay.

No. Most private schools don't take the state exams at all. They don't have to, even if they take state money. So, there aren't any "scores" that are comparable at all.
Private schools have the advantage of total control over whom they let in and whom they kick out. It makes a huge difference.
Private schools certainly have their own issues that public schools don't have to deal with, but they can't all be painted with the "better than public schools" brush.
