Grant was a good strategist
Well he tended to wait till the odds were stacked heavily in his favor. He had good patience and persistence. So many times during a battle he'd fail, fail again, call more soldiers, fail again, then succeed.

probably the best big picture guy for the North.
Absolutely
The argument is moot but I myself and many others wonder what would the outcome have been if Lee was in charge of the north and Grant the south. Most believe the war would have been over in months. That wasn't the case so it doesn't matter.
Grant did what it took to achieve his goals though.

I know you realize this , but the problem with this viewpoint is that Grant took over a demoralized Union army halfway through the war, while Lee owned his whole campaign from the start. Grant also very well may have won in a few months had he been General from the onset. Would Lee have realized sooner he was fighting a lost war with better leadership from the Union army? One of the most interesting parts of the Civil War was the ebb and flow of changing tactics and introduction of new war machines.
