Has anyone hiked the Incan trail. Four days, three nights ending at Machu Picchu. Was thinking of going in October.

I didn't hike the Inca Trail, but I did spend 17 days traveling in Peru in 2016. I've been to 31 countries, and I will say that Machu Picchu absolutely lives up to the hype. The natural beauty of the place would make it worth visiting even if there were no ruins there.

Never been, but I've heard there are better hikes in the area so you might want to split a visit to Cusco with a daytrip to Machu Pichu and a more scenic or interesting hike to somewhere else, like Rainbow Mountain.
I seem to remember being pretty underwhelmed by Youtube videos as well. I think some people just feel like it's more "authentic" to say you hiked to MP instead of however all the other tourists arrived there.
Whatever you decide remember that region is at altitude (10-15,000 feet) and hiking or even sleeping at that altiitude can be rougher than most people expect. Plan accordingly.

I went up the tourist way but I was also sneaking up there on a short trip.
Read a horror story of some girls getting food poisoning on their hike and having to continue while sick.
My wife spent a night in a Peruvian clinic in Cusco but that was her fault for wanting WiFi so bad she ate at a shitty tourist trap at the base of the mountain.
I saved my energy for hiking Huanya Picchu. I was fricking gassed.
