Do it, we took our 2 sons years ago, (before the 3rd was born) and it was great. The limestone bluffs are really beautiful, the water is clear and you can see the fish. There is nothing like it in the southern U.S.

You don't get the same type of scenery, but Devil's river in Texas is also a great trip. I just quoted your post to say you're right, but there's also nothing like Devil's river. Two completely different, but equal trips IMO.
Devil's is not something I'd do with a 12-year-old, though. I'll probably take my son when's he's 16-17 and can be the pack mule.
