Mary Queen of Scots

The wife and I both watched it together with our Son who was home from college tonight.
We’re both well over 60% Scots Irish and we’ve traveled extensively over there, explored a ton of the country’s history .... I’m an avid history buff on the region as is my Son-in-Law who teaches college level history as is my niece who teaches college level history .... we all revel in Scottish and Irish and English history.
This movie was touted as historically correct with a small play on certain aspects for artistic reasons.
Movie was total shite. It was so out of order, so made up, so absolutely false it was heinous. And forget the many many historical inaccuracies.
Why the gratuitous black man white woman relationship which almost certainly didn’t happen .... and why the gratuitous LBGT storyline in an effort to paint another hateful picture of white European lords against the poor gay men? I could give a shite about either in the modern world .... but it was totally unnecessary in the telling of this story.

Will the Hollywood bullshite ever end.
Just say the movie is for entertainment purposes only and don’t try to pawn it off as historically accurate.
Just say it’s a bunch of made up bulllshit based very very loosely on actual events and that a lot of creative license was taken in the script and the making of the movie.
One of the worst movies ever IMHO. Every Scot, every Irishman, every Englishman should be offended by that shite show of a film as should all descendants of those cultures.
The occasional narration from actual letters exchanged between Mary and Elizabeth was pure smoke and mirrors to deceive and mislead. The overplayed modern day SJW nonsense inserted into the story was just as bad if not worse.
Anyways ... the movie accomplished nothing in terms of art OR historical story telling IMHO.
ETA: There wasn’t even a Shakespearean quality to the story telling ... and we all know Shakespeare could tell a good story but was full of shite. At least he made his revisionist history entertaining and engaging.

In all honesty, I’m trying to remember the last time I saw a largely accurate historical movie. Not that I don’t disagree with the premise that the saga in question was plenty juicy enough that it’d be good story telling if it was told accurately. I just don’t think it’s remotely some new liberal thing.

Historical accuracy is out the window in favor of diversity casting. Get used to it. It's all the rage in Hollywood these days. I love Gemma Chan. She's beautiful and a very good actress, but I'm pretty sure that Bess Hardwick wasn't Asian. Having a black man on Elizabeth's privy council was even more ridiculous. As far as the LGBT plot line, I've seen at least one other film about Mary where Darnley was depicted as being gay. I have no idea if there is any historical basis for this, or it was just creative license on the part of the writers.
One glaring inaccuracy in this film was having Mary speak with a Scottish brogue. As she spent all of her formative years in the French court, she would've undoubtedly had a French accent. I'm not sure if Mary and Elizabeth ever exchanged letters as shown, but there is no historical basis in fact to confirm that they ever met in person, despite this being a pivotal scene in this film as well as in other versions of Mary's story.

While it wasn't well-received by critics, Outlaw King starring Chris Pine was a movie released very recently that was praised for its historical accuracy.

And yes, I agree with the whole Hollywood mantra/ talking points these days ... it’s inescapable unfortunately.
Agree also about the recent Netflix film about Robert the Bruce. They went all out to tell that story and present those sets as historically accurate as possible and I thought Chris Pine did a good job.
Most historically correct movie ever? I dunno .... I’d probably have to say Band of Brothers but it really doesn’t classify as a movie. Still, I met a lot of those guys at the Airborne Convention in Houston in ‘82 I think it was and they said the books were spot on.
They were younger than I am now at the time - when I met so many of them.
I actually like Cate Blancett’s version of Elizabeth much better... even though it was pro English and I’m not a big fan of the English.
Besides ... Fanny Ardant played Mary in that version and she was one of the most beautiful women in the world in her day. And listen, they cast her as Mary because she is French which supports that contention in a post above.

I understand what you’re saying. I’m a history fan, as is my father. He’s still not happy about Gladiator and fussed about it every time it comes on. Most movies, like Gladiator, don’t advertise themselves as being historically accurate. If this movie did claim to be accurate and still wasn’t, then I agree with your critique. The forced diversity and whatnot is just a fact of modern movies now. Personally, i didn’t like seeing Christian Bale play Moses, just as i don’t need to see a black guy on the Privy Council.

Didn't Fanny play Mary of Guise? She was the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Samantha Morton played Mary QOS in the sequel to Elizabeth.
