In a culture of self loving selfie taking egotistical assholes in sports, he was a true professional. What an incredible talent and person. Baseball will definitely miss him.

Ichiro’s rookie season was crazy. Seattle had lost Randy Johnson, then Griffey Jr., then A-Rod to free agency in three consecutive offseasons.

The Mariners had built a nice roster with a bright future, but they couldn’t hold onto their superstars. They responded by signing a slender slap hitting Japanese player. A lot of people doubted his body could handle 162 games, or if he was even good enough to be an everyday player.

Ichiro made an immediate splash, and the Mariners had an incredible season winning 116 games.
