This is the fundamental drawback but also the fun of studying history. It’s difficult to look back that far but fun to try. The Spartans are revered as warriors and thought of as stoic, humorless, and rigid which is the image they probably intentionally put out. Yet they were also a musical people who loved to dance. You just never know what really went on back then.
It’s why I don’t get worked up about movies being wrong. There are some things and dates we definitely do know but 90% of history, especially pre-printing press, is educated guesswork.
