I had WWI vets in my family as a kid in the 50s and 60s.

I remember all of their stories like it was yesterday.

Both of my great grandfathers on my mother’s side fought and my paternal grandfather as well although he was a bit nutty because of it, he struggled before passing around ‘58 if I remember correctly.... a younger man than I am now. I cut my thumb carving an apple up with his pocket knife in his backyard, cut it deep, and he wrapped it in cotton and a piece of dirty rag and we went to the fishing pond that way.

He didn’t talk much and he had the shakes and he was permanently shell shocked and would cry at night in his room .... I remember that.

That was a tough war.

Had a bunch of family fight in WWII too, and Korea and Vietnam .... we all serve in my family. One cousin didn’t and now a couple of the younger second cousins will not along with neither will my Son.

War is just a bitch few can understand but most of us realize that the first WW was bad, and so was the second. Really bad.

So was the Civil War though.
