In the comics the X-Men have been consistently more intriguing than the Avengers.

In the movies not so much.

They go back and forth, but yeah this is true.

The movies had so much good stuff to work with but squandered it all with a poor focus on Logan, and a lack of any other intriguing character outside of a misued Magneto.

Logan and X2 have been the best films, and are on par with the best of the MCU. First Class probably is too. But they have destroyed the Dark Phoenix story, and it looks like twice, left one of the most complex Marvel characters as a side character, and give us watered down versions of DoFP, the best stuff like the Storm, Brotherhood the Hellfire Club, Gambit, etc.

And Mystique was a terrible character to build around. Just awful.

Jennifer Lawrence career took off after first class, so Fox tried capitalizing on that. I agree, it was not a smart decision. I didn't think she was bad in First Class. I actually liked her and McAvoy's relationship.

it was really bad luck that Lawrence blew the frick up and they basically had to make her top billing
