I believe it is backwards compatible to the first generation of airpods you currently have. May cost a little more, but if you want to go that route better to do it before you buy the $69 charging case.

I ordered a new (V1) case for $69 last night, and then checked this forum today and learned that Apple announced a stand-alone V2 wireless charging case for only $79, available for immediate order. I called to cancel my initial order, but they said I’ll have to just return the package when I receive it since it’s gone through processing already. I then ordered the wireless charging case for only $10 more.
