This probably isn’t the best place to post this but I didn’t know where else.
is it worth getting? I know it’s a bitch to pass. Once you get it, you can consult all you want which can mean a lot of money. I currently pay $2000 for an SE stamp for “checking” calculations/drawings no matter the scope of work. SE stamps are required in Illinois and california primarily. Depending on the work of course.

So you paying someone to rubber stamp drawings? $2000 isn't enough to cover the liability insurance much less the inherent risk.

Why did you put checking within quote marks? I suspect it is because it is not a real check but a cursory review. The fact that you pay a flat rate despite the complications of the design tells me your are gaming the system.

If the SE or PE for that matter is not in responsible charge of the design, he/she could lose their license and be open to a lot of liability.

That’s like one day, maybe one and a half days, of billing time. Not to mention the liability.

FWIW, an engineer can't stamp shite that was not prepared by themselves or under their direct supervision. Also, WTF is an "SE"?

Based off his comment about Illinois, he’s referring to the SE license which is separate from the Structural PE. In Louisiana the only time you need it is to submit plans to the Orleans Parish Fire Marshall from what I understand. Other states it’s required for essential structures like hospitals, schools, etc. In Illinois it’s required for all structures.

And I wouldn’t go around saying your paying someone to “check” drawings and stamp them. That’s illegal and the engineer would lose his license. Also, unless you are all in you don’t have a chance to pass. I thought the structural PE was a joke. I took the SE and got recked. Studied a lot and was sure I passed the second time and barely failed. That was just the vertical test. I’ll be taking vertical again as well as lateral for the first time in 3 weeks.

Interesting...I didn't think I remembered structural being one of the available disciplines back when I took the PE.
