They were still issuing WWII era C rations late as the early 70's and the ones made up to the mid 50's until the MRE's came out in the 80's. They were designed to lock you up not give diarrhea.

I had both during my time in the Corps, WWII and the 50s. I used to would kill for the pound cake and the peaches!!!!
