Throwback Jerseys From 1959

I got hold of my brother's 1960 Gumbo yearbook and was astonished to find out LSU football wore ALTERNATE uniforms for back-to-back road games, @ Kentucky and @ Florida (both 9-0 Tiger victories). The photos are all black-and-white, but the jersey shade matches the pants and helmets, so I assume it was a SOLID GOLD UNIFORM! They looked so nice, and the home teams in both games were wearing white uniforms.
Does anyone have color pictures of said uniforms?

I do. I’ll post them tomorrow

This is Billy Cannon, in 1957, wearing the gold jersey and traditional gold pants.
Lsu wore all gold against Florida in 1957 and 1959. It’s easy to distinguish the two, as the jerseys in 1957 had no numbers on the sleeves, and in 1959 they did. Additionally, in 1957, the color pattern for the shoulder stripes went purple/white/purple; and in 1959 it went white/purple/white. Further, when looking at photos of both games, Florida wore all white in 1959 and I believe blue pants in 1957.

The stripes on the '59 jerseys are different as well: white/purple/white.
I love the '59 all gold look, and would like to see these in Tiger Stadium for one game each year, maybe this year v. Florida (60th anniversary issue!)

Man those game programs carry a no holes barred approach to what could be printed. No way those methods of capital punishment shown on the '57 program be printed nowadays, in our era of more thoughtfulness and sensitivity.

i find it hilarious when people scream to not mess with lsu's "traditional" uni. the current uniform is recent and these pics are just more proof. muh "changing uniforms is for oregon."

I think 50 cents is the price of the program, not the game ticket!

the current uniform is basically identical to the unfiforms we've worn since the late 50s (or the last 60+ years). Yes, the stripes and cuts of the uniform have had subtle changes over the years, but by and large it's the same basic uniform.
The only "major" change that has occurred is we now have a logo on the helmet instead of numbers, but the actual helmet design (gold with a triple stripe of purple and white) has not changed since we started wearing actual helmets.
The last major change to our uniforms (excluding one-off alternates) was after the 1956 season.
And if you'll notice the alternate jerseys worn in 2009 against Arkansas and in 2016 against State were plays-off of the Jimmy Taylor era jerseys

Some of them would definitely cause a stir in the world we live in today. I love the ‘Chase’ cover programs, as well as the cartoon ones. They are my favorites along with any war time program.

quote:we'll have to agree to disagree. the style of numbers has changed. the color of the jerseys has alternated. the logo on the helmet has changed or not existed. the stripes have changed. lsu's color switched from gold to dull mustard/goldenrod to the current bright canary yellow. you can all all those individual changes "subtle" but altogether, they represent frequent uniform changes. my point is, some codgers today try to act like lsu is bama or psu and hasn't even tweaked the uni ever (thus we should never wear alternates) which is patently false.

I loved the purple helmets we wore v. State this year. Don't care for the purple pants, at least the ones we wore that one game @ Kentucky. Maybe if there were a purple pants with white and gold stripes I could get on board.
The worst LSU football uniform has to be gold helmets and pants, with purple jerseys. Not aesthetically; they DO look good, but because there's ample evidence that uniform combo is jinxed!

not much

from white to white?

already said it did, but the rest of the helmet hasn't

not much
quote:
lsu's color switched from gold to dull mustard/goldenrod to the current bright canary yellow
that has more to do with the materials the uniforms are made of than anything over the years

no one acts like that, but by and large, our uniform has only had very subtle changes the past 60+ years.
Funny you mention Alabama. They haven't always had stripes on their pants
Their stripes were also thicker at one point than they are currently
They also wore white helmets for a few years
Penn State's uniforms have also changed. This is what they wore in the 50s
This what they wore in the 60s

Those helmets with pants just like LSU's current gold, just purple instead (With Gold trim where there is purple).
Just for a one time change.
