To me it’s like if there were no more mockingbirds, june bugs, copperheads, any of many animals that don’t add anything to the ecosystem, per se.

What makes you think that those animals add nothing to the ecosystem?

It is the largest bird in North America and has been around 1000s of years until the direct results of man nearly made them extinct. The Rockport Tx area has millions of dollars of ecotourism tied to their come back, there are a few reasons.
