So what's stopping a visiting fan from throwing something on the floor in a close game to draw a technical foul on the home team.

Exactly what I was thinking. Why is the home team assessed a technical for something a fan did anyway?

I posted a thread about this on the SEC board pointing out the absurdity of punishing the team in this situation and most everyone was completely dismissive of it.

They apparently see no problem at all with punishing players for the action of one lone fan the players have absolutely no control over whatsoever.

To punish the players, coaches, and the 99.99% of fans who did nothing wrong for the actions of one lone idiot is pretty much the definition of injustice.

Hell just get a bunch of buddies to do it with you at random moments during the game and give your team 5-6 extra free throws.

But yeah, dumb rule

Exactly. Refs rarely call a tech in that situation and usually give out a warning first.
