They called it stock car racing when I started watching as a kid in the 70's. Still remember Earnhardt Sr. being the upstart kid in the late 70's when Richard Petty and David Pearson were going toe to toe. They played for keeps back then. Vague memory of Cale Yarborough slugging it out toe to toe on the track with someone. It was like WWF and racing combined back then.

The Allison Bros., I think. Some folks say that broadcast put 'stock car racing' in the public eye.
