This morning, I got to thinking…. When was the last time we had a regular season basketball game of such importance? And by importance, I mean in terms of winning the league. It seems like for the last 10 to 15 years that games of importance for us have been whether or not we need this win to get into the NCAA Tournament. This game against Kentucky feels different. It feels like we are ready to break through and compete for the league crown and prove we belong on the national stage again.

So, I went back and looked at the 2008-09 season to see what the big regular season games were. However, in that season we ran away with the conference regular season championship mostly because the league as a whole was down that year. Despite losing our last two conference games, we still won the league by 3 games. There was no game on that schedule where we played somebody down the stretch where both teams had great conference records.

After that season, I went back and looked at the 2005-06 Final Four season. On February 11, 2006 we played at 7th ranked and eventual national champion Florida. We were 8-1 and Florida was 6-3 in conference play going into that game. Despite being unranked in that game and losing, we rebounded after that loss and won the rest of our regular season games and took the regular season title.

I bring this up because it is a great time to be an LSU Basketball fan. I am absolutely jacked for a regular season basketball game that actually means somethings. I have been starving for a game like this one on Tuesday for years!

Win or lose, the things that Will Wade has done for this program in just two seasons is absolutely incredible.

Beating Oklahoma in 2015/16 would have been nice :(

Your title should be biggest regular season conference basketball game then. Oklahoma the Ben Simmons year was huge. Had LSU won that game that season is probably completely different.

We won the regular season title in 2009, and I think the Kentucky game that year was what sealed it for us.

Winning the league would be a tremendous accomplishment (particularly this year). But in the grand scheme of things, winning the league in college basketball isn't all that important as long as you make it into the NCAA tournament. At that point it doesn't matter if you won the league or not. Absent a complete meltdown the rest of the way I don't see LSU missing the NCAAT.

I would argue the biggest game of the last decade or so was when #1 and undefeated Kentucky came into the PMAC in 2015. That was probably the last juggernaut team in college basketball. LSU had them on the ropes and just couldn't hang on (lost by two).

Tomorrow night is big, but LSU may get a chance to knock off an even better team (Tenn.) just 10 days later.

Tennessee at home in a couple of weeks is bigger. This one tomorrow is very big. If we win we will be on our way to a 2 or 3 seed. Beat Kentucky and Tennessee. Would be a Numebr 1 seed.

Kentucky is a big game but it's not the biggest of the season. I would consider Tennessee at home a bigger one since they're currently the #1 team in the country.

I do think it'll be a bigger upset if LSU wins tomorrow night. Personally, I think UK is the better team right now.
