I can say that we have first hand experience with this. My daughter while obviously not male had very similar numbers 32 ACT, 1470 SAT and 4.37 GPA. She took 14 AP classes in High School.
She didn't get into Vandy. We went to Vandy for a Fall welcome day. Then we were invited back for a Spring recruitment weekend. While there we sat in a room with several people on a panel that were attending Vandy.
The thing that stuck out to me was that everyone obviously had those same type scores. Reading websites we saw several that had lower scores, but they all had a story.
Standing there one by one a person would step up and tell us about their essay and how this person spent 6 weeks in a third world country, this person set up libraries in rural community and that person collected 2K coats for the homeless.
I knew then that my daughter was not getting in. She had a little time in the public library and a little time at the local animal shelter.
