His question had me wondering and I found this data from someone compiling the FBI Uniform Crime Reports:

The rate of felonious killings per 100,000 officers has declined from about 18 in 1989 to about 5 in 2013. It was over 3 times safer to be a police officer in 2013 than 26 years ago.


Plus, no internet in those years and no 24 hour news cycles...you maybe heard 30 minutes of news in a day.
