They will very likely recap the first one's important story beats in a prologue or something.

My first ever RE game was actually RE2 on the PS1 and I wasn't lost at all. I quickly went out and bought RE1 right after I finished RE2 regardless.

If you want the best version of RE1 the Gamecube remake (and more recent HD updates of it) is by far the best version of the game of course.

The original PS1 version will feel very rough around the edges but it should also be played eventually just because it's a piece of gaming history and like most older games, you get used to the wonkiness. The original RE trilogy on the PS1 (1,2,3) is all an eventual must play.

A very short non-spoilery recap of RE1:

There have been some bizarre murders on the outskirts of this midwestern city (Racoon City) and the police investigation eventually leads them to an old mansion out in the woods. The game unfolds and you quickly find out it was due to zombies created by a biological weapon outbreak.

RE2 is set 2 months after RE1.

I just got to the residence area in REmake HD (halfway I guess). Never played it or 1 prior. Dripping with atmosphere and tension. Great game that holds up even today. Never played Nemesis either, so I’m pumped they’re remaking that too.

RE2 is going to be the best reward ever. Been working on a $50MM+ project at work for the last month that has taken years off my life. I wrap it up on Thursday afternoon - perfect timing
