How old is the child? I always brought them on sale and then learned to smock myself (already knew how to sew). My dtr wore them probably until she was 5 and chose to quit wearing them.

Smocked dresses should be in the list of hobbies of someone in your child's extended family.
How's your child going to learn to be creative by watching things arrive in bags? Take the kid to pick out fabric and let him or her watch the sewing and smocking happening.
