Have you ever been to/r/NBA ? NBA players have just as much a presence off the court as they do on the court and theres a shitload of impressionable 14-15 year old social media heads that take personality into consideration as much as strict basketball performance.
China does something similar. Jeremy Lin and Derrick Rose are being heavily carried by China. Also Steph Curry is a China favorite. Not that he wouldn't be a top vote getter anyways, just saying China is boosting him too.
Doncic is another one of those 60% player 40% personality/hype.
It got out that all Doncic does is play ball and play fortnite...guess how that goes over with the crowd I mentioned above? Teenagers eat that shite up.
