Traveling to Indochina with kids this summer for 2-3 weeks.

I definitely want to see Angor Wat and Halung bay.

Any recommendations? Either general travel recs or more specific itinerary recs?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to Vietnam in 2 weeks, and I've been looking at the trip reviews in the stickied thread at the top of this page. Check them out. Maybe I can make my own too after I come back.

I live in China, and it is only a 2.5 hour nonstop flight to Hanoi. So that's a plus. I'm looking forward to being in Vietnam during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Curious. How old are your kids? My goal is to travel like that with my own so your story is interesting to me.

Depending on their age if you're going to be in Cambodia the Killing Fields may be a lesson they need to learn. If they are five maybe not

Laos with kids you'll probably want to head north to Vang Vieng, Luang prabang and maybe Nong Khiaw

We have two boys, ages 9 and 11. They travel well. It's usually me that gets grumpy in transit. We love traveling with our kids. We do a lot of reading and pertinent movie watching before each trip.

They both got emotional at Schindler's factory in Krakow. I'm not sure how the killing fields will go down with them.

I did Cambodia and Vietnam for 3 weeks last Feb/March. I did a pretty lengthy review of it on here if you're interested. LINK

A few easy tips off the top of my head:

-Definitely get a driver in Cambodia for the Angkor Wat tours. We did a 2 day, saw about 7-8 temples, and had the luxury of riding in a nice air conditionined Lexus SUV. We're typically not the tour type of people, but it's well worth it in this case. It was fairly cheap for 4 of us.

-If you're going to splurge anywhere in your accommodations, do it in Siem Reap. We made the mistake of staying in an AirBnB and we ended up with bed bugs. (Might be a good idea to buy some bed bug preventer stuff anyway)

-Not sure what your itinerary is in Vietnam, but if you have time I would seriously look into stopping in Phong Nha and doing a day, or even overnight, jungle/cave trek. It was by far the highlight of our trip. Depending on how adventurous your kids are, they could love it.

awesome link to your review ......

I'm going to be in Chiang Mai most of the time for work, but this helps narrow my focus for side travel while there.

thanks rin

Yes . Frick the Vietnam Government. Worthless pieces of Communist shite. Making their own people’s live crappy and arbitrary, crooked as hell, padding their own pockets, making progress molasses -slow.

The Vietnamese people circa 2018 however, are quite lovely, strangely pro- American and VERY respectful of servicemen like yourself who sacrificed so much on their soil. They really work to make sure guys like you get treated well.

All that said, I’m sure I’d feel they same way you do and thank you for being a great American . Respect.

We had a great three day stay in Chiang Mai.

We did the elephant rides, but if you are a PETA member, you'll probably want to skip it.

The tuk-tuk rides were fun.

Bangkok has Uber, but as of 2016, Chiang Mai didn't.

We stayed at a nice hotel with large grounds outside of the city, which we really liked.

Read some of the info in the sticky thread on our Travel Board home page.

I know Rintintin and DoUrden each posted some fantastic reviews with pics.
