quote:by position, LBs are near the average for career length at 3yrs. Just behind QBs at 3 yrs 1mo. On the extremes are OL at 3y8m, and WRs at 2y2m.
The point that seems to be overlooked...
The human body can only take X amount of years in the LB position
He is never going to get that year of earnings back (played for free)
However, 8 months is a lot of money.
What these numbers really reinforce is the importance of that 2nd contract. On the average, that's the one you end your career on.
So to me the real question isn't time at position (or under contract) it is this: Does delaying that start point increase that SECOND contract.
Just like at our jobs many times where the raises put you depends on where you started at. Raises don't go down, but they don't bring everybody to the same pay point either. So the bigger the rookie contract (pre-defined by draft position since the new 2011 CBA), the bigger the 2nd contract (which, on the average, will be your last).
If you go from struggling to make final cut to being a shoe-in to make it to year 2 by staying: YES
In Devin's case, an extra year will NOT change that second contract at all. It will be determined by his rookie (and 2nd year) performance at, and only at, the NFL level. Delay might not hurt, but it will not help.
Hence he should go.
