The murder rate has steadily been dropping. Actually the murder rate has been steadily dropping nationwide.
Nola was at 151 in 2017 with a population of about 393K . NYC had 290 murders with a population of over 8.6 million. Less than twice the murders, abut 22 times the population. It may be going in the right direction but it still has a long way to go.

I moved to Austin from NO and still can't believe Austin's numbers. Almost 1 million people in city limits and less than 40 murders.
