Anyone ever read Shogun?

100 pages in and I'm totally hooked. I love books with good, detailed political maneuvers and calculations, and this book is full of them (granted I still understand absolutely nothing about how feudal Japan operated in the 1500's.) The society feels more alien than books that are set on frickin Venus, and the whole thing is just samurai awesomeness so far.

It’s on my list to read.
There was a thread earlier this year that discussed this and the other books by that author in detail.

Thanks, just checked it out. The OP in that thread was almost identical to mine

Yep, one of my favorite books ever.
The entire Asian Saga is supposed to be great but the only one I've read so far is Shogun.

Top 5 book for me.
I listened on Audible. With 15 hours to go I was starting to get bummed it would come to an end.

May not have been the "best" book I ever read but one of the most fun. Feudeal Japan of that era was even crazier than the book, which is based on history.

I was considering adding it to my reading list a while back, but then I read a bunch of reviews from Japanese people that said it was romanticized horseshite as far as accuracy. It's probably still a good story, but it made me decide to hold off on reading it.

Possible. But it’s not like they were there. Haha!

When you’re done make sure you check out Tai-Pan.

Maybe one of the most strange chapters in any book i've read. It made sense with the book but kind of went off the reservations
Reminded me of the "IT" orgy in how out of left field it was compared to what else was going on
It is a great book

A while back and it took me months.
I need to do it again as that was >10 years ago

Yes long ago, great book.
I think the editor had James cut the book back, with 200-300 pages left he has many plots running and they all are rapped up very quick.
To me it seems he was going for a 1600 page book and was told to cut it back.

Thanks for the post, I just ordered Shogun from Audible. At 53 hours it seems like a good use of a credit.
Lonesome Dove was my last Audible credit and it was just great.

It’s great. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the narration when you are done. Some characters were better than others. Some took getting used to.
LD was the same. The first 5 hours or so I was annoyed that Gus yelled every sentence. Then I started liking it and calling my wife Woodrow in that voice. Haha!

I got used to Lonesome Dove pretty quick and liked the narration for Gus, all of them really. Then I used a credit on Comanche Moon. What terrible narration. I returned it and used the credit on Shogun. It's the only time I've returned an Audible book because the narration was so bad.

Good to know.
Let me know if you start saying “Shikata ga nai”.
I did. My wife was glad when that book was done too. Ha!

I read it a couple of times back in the day. It was must read material in the 70s.
One of those books you never forget.
