.30-30 is easy to beat. Several that are better performers in a similar style, fast handling rifle. 35 REM, 358 WIN, 375 WIN, .38-55 WIN, and 444 all come to mind. A .308 or 7mm-08 in a short action bolt or lever would be nice, also.
For years, I thought about getting a .358 WIN in Browning BLR for a woods rifle. What I have used for years, with good results, is a Weatherby Ultralight 257 magnum. Great handling rifle. And, no, the bullets don’t blow up at 30 yards.
