Much better developed characters
That’s been my main problem throughout the series.
Outside of Taniel, Tanas and to a lesser extent Mihali and Ka’poel I really don’t give shite what happens to any of these people.
But I’m still locked in and on the edge of my seat
I can see what yall mean sort of - although I'm only 2/3 of the way through book 1.
I am enjoying the new magic vs. old magic dichotomy thus far though. Will probably try and get through book 1 tonight if I can and do a big chunk of book 2 tomorrow.

I’d recommend Ted Chiang‘s short story collection Exhalation. It’s nine entertaining and thought-provoking stories ranging in length from 4 pages to basically a novella.
It reminds me of a book version of Black Mirror. Although maybe not quite as dark and maybe a bit more philosophical.
