Black mecca
True, but if ATL is black Mecca, New Orleans is black Chechnya.
I moved here a year ago with a young family. Location is key, I work near the Airport and live in Peachtree City. It is a little slice of fantastic middle to upper middle class suburbia, almost to a fault. If I had to commute to mid town or god forbid Buckhead I would have to move somewhere north, that is the primary drawback.
From way down here I can make it to Inman Park, the Aquarium or Zoo in 45 minutes, on the weekend.
The major selling point for me was a modern metropolis in the south with a diverse economy and all of the ancillary lifestyle benefits. Unlike Nola or even Houston, the failure of a single industry will not tank our economy or home values. It certainly has its drawbacks like traffic outside of your commute (I refuse to drive to SunTrust Park on a weekday), but the perks are fantastic.
I lived in urban Washington DC and Chicago, when life necessitated a move to the suburbs, Atlanta, and more specifically Peachtree City, was way more appealing than Naperville and a hell of a lot cheaper than Arlington or Montgomery Counties.
And to the poster who said there are too many places named Peachtree- 100% agreed!
