As I understand it there must be some type of nail present. Most of the studs I'll need won't have nails in them in any place other than top and bottom

What exactly is covering your walls and how is that attached?

Correct. If there are no nails or screws, the Stud Buddy can't find it. It's just an overpriced magnet wrapped in some type of plastic or composite that is non-marring.

My issue with the less expensive (under $50) electronic devices is that many don't sense very deep. There some that claim to be able to differentiate between wood studs, electrical wiring and copper plumbing, but I wasn't willing to spend a hundred bucks to find out they're full of shite.

cant you use that and use a level to draw a straight line up or down from that spot?
