Shot tons of steel out of an old Belgian A5 as a kid. Never had any problems.

doesn't have choke threads and im guessing 32" is full choke.
The rule of thumb on the fixed choke A5 is mod or more open, no larger than 2 steel, I would shoot 4 steel and do.

Thanks for letting me know that, much appreciated. 2-4 shot, got it. I'll check when I get back to my parents at some point this week as I left it there.
@Jack Ruby thank you as well, I saw many people say they had done that and had never had problems so it is good to hear another account of there being no problems. Thank ya both.

If your barrel has one "star" it is Full choke. I would think it is because I have never seen a 32 in that was not.

I admit I am new to the old A5's but had been wanting to get one forever just cause and I didn't pay attention to asterisks, I should have looked into that earlier. I havent had a chance to check on it but I could be totally wrong but I would assume a 32" barrel is a full. I have a 30" on my bucket list in a newer semi for duck hunting just to add to the collection but they are pretty rare these days it seems, so the 32" I had to grab regardless. I can't imagine a 32" with a code black duck or kicks high flyer screwed in (if it was possible), and what the pattern would look like at 20 yards.

I have my dad’s 3” full choke Belgian A-5. He shot steel through it so the damage is probably already done. I will try to find one of the newer barrels myself.

Yeah, I have read of a lot of people dong it and it messing with the barrel and potentially other parts expanding but I would imagine there have been a lot of old baws that just went for it when the lead ban happened.

End of the barrel on the Belgian made barrels is thin. I think that was the main reason with the possibility of the barrel failing. It still grouped the steel shot pretty tight from what I remember.

Old time A5s look cool and all, but they are absolute mules to shoot for an extended amount of time... Especially if you don't have a buttpad on the stock.

I don’t have much to add about shooting steel shot, but my uncle won a Belgian made 3” magnum A5 years ago with a 32” full choke and he’s killed a ton of deer with it over the last 40 years shooting buckshot. I’d love to get my hands on that gun.

I appreciate it Catahoula, Jack Ruby, and Red Beer. It really was more of a pretty gun for the collection anyway (its not that old and just a Japanese) but I have been thinking if it doesnt shoot steel well that it would be a fun gun to deer hunt with. Thanks again for the input on it.

Another option is to get the barrel threaded. I love the old A5s and have quite a few in my collection. I sent my 12mag barrel off to get threaded and get the cones lengthened. Best shooting gun I own now. I love it. And I disagree with the poster who says they kick. Set the rings up correctly and it shoots so smooth. Looks up Art’s gun and get a rebuild kit and have a brand new gun that lasts a lifetime.

You ain't kidding about that thing kicking. I have an A5 from the 50's that my stepdad gave me in really good condition. It's a Light 12 that I only break out for special occasion skeet tournaments, and after the 80th or so shot I start to question my decision making ability.
It also has "special steel" stamped on the barrel and I wasn't sure if that meant you can shoot steel through it or not, although I never have. So this thread cleared that up for me too.

Do you have the friction rings flipped the correct way?
Having it the wrong way usually ends up with a cracked fore stock.

I had considered that, but hadn't gotten into looking into the process. This being a Japanese one it has a butt pad (not sure if that is true on all the Japanese ones but this one does). The injector port has some wear that could use cleaning but the wood and barrel are in really good shape and the receiver is in pretty good shape with a few blemishes from someone hunting with it, which I dont mind. It can be polished up so it isn't some super valuable collectors gun, but just one I had been looking for for a while for my own collection. However, I was curious about that process with the barrel threading, or getting another barrel to switch out, I just really wanna duck hunt with an old 32" barrel lol, but thank you, I will look them up. I appreciate it, and I appreciate all the insight from all y'all with experience with this, being an older gun that shares nothing but the name and humpback with my newer model A5. Sorry again for bumping an ancient thread.
