I think he means call out the passengers in the back to board first.

And I agree.

Airlines used to do this. Problem is when they started charging for checking a bag people all want to get on first to make sure they get an overhead spot. No one wants to check a bag for $25

People in the back of the plane are those without status. People with status believe they should get overhead space.

Solution is you "rent" an overhead space for the flight then no one else can take it. Measure the bag and that's the space you get. That's a crapton of work though

when the overhead space fills up, or is considered filled up, to expedite boarding, most airlines, a least the big ones, offer to check your bag for free

I'd pay $25 bucks to NOT check a bag. If you check a bag for any trip a week or less I know you aren't a seasoned traveler and are a chump.

Yep that's the problem with boarding the back first. You know half those folks are gonna throw their carry-on in the first overhead space available then go back to their seat.

If airlines removed the checked bag fee 75% of the delays in boarding would be removed. You can gate check for free, I'm convinced the only reason they charge for bags is to reduce the amount of folks they need loading bags on the plane. The revenue has to be pretty insignificant since almost no one checks a bag these days.
