The reason he would get an extension is for recruiting purposes. If O were to be a lame duck going into next year the negative recruiting would kill us. Think people, an extension does not mean larger buyout or that we can't fire him anyway.

He wouldn’t be a lame duck, he has three more seasons after this one. And yes, the buyout will increase since they’re tied to the number of years on the contract. Maybe the yearly rate won’t increase, but the aggregate will increase with any additional years added.

Les Miles was all but fired in 2015 and he finished with the #2 class.

This.
The extension is irrelevant if the buyout is manageable. They could give him a 1,000 year extension and it wouldn't matter if his buyout is $0
