Baton Rouge High doesn’t have many sports. Why can’t they be good at some?
Because the good BRSC kids don't go there in enough numbers to make them competitive.

Baton Rouge High got at least one vote in the preseason coaches poll:
2018-2019 LHSSCA PRESEASON RANKINGS
November 6, 2018
For immediate press release:
The Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association (LHSSCA), conducts this poll. The voting committee consists of ten coaches from each division throughout the state. The number in brackets indicates first place votes. Records, when listed, are in American-style, W-L-D format. Wins are in blue, draws are in green, and losses are in red. Games against non-LHSAA opponents are in purple (non-LHSAA games do not count towards the official record/power ratings for each team but may be considered in the coaches' poll).

Exactly. And this applies to all schools in the Baton Rouge area. BRHS stopped being consistently competitive when they moved up a division about 20 years ago. A few years after that, they stopped bringing in premier coaches and voilà, mediocrity.
