I've come to not accept the simple "statistical certainty" argument about all that.
It would be like saying that since there are billions birds that live on 30% of the surface of the earth, it's a stastical certainty that there are birds living in the 70% of the earth that is water.
There are too many variables to life to just base it all on the size of the universe.
I'm not saying there isn't intelligent life out there, just that the shear size of the area and quantity of celestial bodies doesn't necessarily convince me in itself.

It should. There are about 2 trillion galaxies in the part of the Universe that we can see. Now consider that the entire Universe is 100 billion trillion times the size of the part that we can see. Yes, the statistical likelihood is that there are countless other intelligent civilizations out there.

It shouldn’t convince anyone. But considering the size of the universe and the number of “earth-like” planets we know about just in our little backwater corner of it, it’s certaibly persuasive.
