Better to let them than what happened in the 80's. Sherrif's deputies beating students with night sticks so they wouldn't get hurt on the field.
They have to haved the appearance of not allowing fans to rush the field even though they can't stop them.

Law enforcement realized they wouldn't be able to stop them, and if they attempted to, liability could be at stake in case of injury.
They were more concerned with the eye at midfield and the goal posts.
