With the internet and modern communications, people have access to so much more information than used to be possible. One of the results is that we are so much more cynical and jaded than we used to be, including when it comes to politics.

Long gone are the days of yore when the townfolk would gossip "Have you heard? Senator Johnson is coming to town next week. I've heard he's 15-feet tall and once fought off an entire British regiment with only a broken musket and a tomahawk."

Politicians are no longer revered figures. They are pretty much treated with skepticism and suspicion by default.

I think that's why people don't give a shite anymore whether a politician is "polished." Everyone knows now that it's just a BS veneer. The jig is up.
