Why do people say this?

In the 80s, the defense averaged 9th in points per game, with a #1 and a #2 finish.

For his career, the D averaged 11th, including being in the top 8 for half his career, 8 out of 16 times. Of those 8, they were #1 twice, #2 once, #3 once.


Denver made the SB 3 times in the 80s, 86/87/89. Denver's defense averaged 7th place in points against, 1st/15th/7th in those 3 runs.

I mean, what are we talking about when we repeat that tired phrase that Elway did it all on his own? Why did that ever become a thing?
