Something being called a recessive gene does not automatically make it a deleterious gene. It just means that it is only expressed when you have two copies of that gene, one from each parent (think blue eyes in humans). Dominant genes mask recessive genes.

Now, it's possible that those health problems come with other genetic material associated with having silver pups due to inbreeding or something.
