It doesn't though. The kid getting zeroes that turn into 50% is going to get something for nothing once he drops out and starts collecting welfare.

I respectfully disagree. This kid is being taught that he doesn't have to be accountable for his actions, and the government will take care of him. In his mind, why put forth effort when social promotion will pass him on to the next grade level ? Once he enters the real world, he will be primed to take advantage of the welfare system supported by tax payers. He will be a sperm donor and the cycle continues for the next generation of kids.

Regardless if the student is a male or female, the same aforementioned logic applies when parents set their kids up for failure. 30+ years ago it I didn't turn in my homework, my parents would have beaten the shite out of me. We live in a much different world today where the inmates run the asylum

Even this is getting suspect at best.

This is debatable when entitlement programs are factored in.

On the flip side, you can declare bankruptcy and, with hard work and determination, later become successful.

In short, a ZERO plus a 100 equates to an average of 50...still an F.

Whereas an A combined with an F equates to a C.

I get both sides. In St. Tammany I am still allowed to give ZEROES so that is what I do. However, I do allow for re-takes (scaled down with 3 opportunities the 1st 9 weeks, 2 the 2nd, 1 the 3rd, and none the 4th as they are expected to handle business fully by that point). It should be noted that my classes are predominantly freshmen and there is a transition period to high school. After that...re-tests are not an option as they move forward through the upper grades.
