Was feeling really unhealthy and business travel, business meals were killing me with weight gain, and my annual physical wasn't looking good. A fellow poster, CAD703X, suggested trying the Keto plan, or similar.
So in April, I switched my diet, and started using Atkins bars. I gave up rice, potatoes, bread, chips, pasta, sauces, gravies, most fruits, cereals, fried foods, sugar, cookies and desserts.
I started eating lots of salads with fatty dressing, avocados, grilled or sauted green vegetables, cheeses, fish (especially salmon and mahi), low carb tortillas and meat. Steak, ribs, chicken, pulled pork, lamb chops, bacon, sausage, eggs and butter. I drink Irish whiskey occasionally, and even have a good beer or two once in a while. And wine. Don't skip on the wine with a nice dinner. Finally, gave been working out more and in front of the TV less.
Yes, I've lost weight. So far, almost 30 pounds. But I was worried that all that fat in my diet from the meat and butter was going to make my counts go off the charts. Wow, was I wrong.
Heart rate dropped 12 bpm.
Triglycerides fell from 167 to 79.
Total cholesterol dropped from 216 to 168.
HDL (good) cholesterol increased from 37 to 48.
LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased from 146 to 104.
VLDL cholesterol dropped from 33 to 16.
My doctor send me an email this morning (yes, on a Sunday morning) congratulating me on the excellent turnaround and said to stop taking my cholesterol medication and come back in three months to see if the diet is still working. He said I was the first patient he's had that turned around the numbers so quickly on what he thought would have been an unhealthy plan choice.
I'm now a big believer in this diet! I feel better, I can exercise more, my joints don't ache and I just feel better. The wife said I've also stopped snoring at night, too. Bonus!
Thanks CAD!
You are in the majority (noting that a small minority of people will not make improvement on that diet template)

Zoom out and you can quickly realize why we are nearing a "healthcare" catastrophe in the country...
Most folks would have been counseled to do everything opposite of what you have done (with more medication added to combat patient "noncompliance" with "modern" diet recommendations...)
