Flying with a shotgun - learn me something

Taking my annual duck hunting trip up north but I am flying this year instead of driving. I've read the info for american airlines on their website and also read some TSA stuff. Is there anything else I need to be aware of or do when flying with my shotgun? Other than having it unloaded and in a hard shell case that locks.

Are you buying shells where you hunt or traveling with them?
And at a minimum you need to declare to the airline that you're checking a firearm.

Unless you saw it off it won't fit in most overhead bins

Figured it would be easier to just buy shells up there where I am hunting. I'm sure there would be some high fees associated with checking them since they are so heavy.

If you follow the process AA has in place its a pretty simple and easy experience. If you are going to make this a regular thing I suggest just spending the money now on a good case "Pelican" style and be done with it. I also don't use the TSA locks I have my one that I use.

You can’t use TSA last locks, and put a lock in every available place.

Get yourself a nice sling and carry it on. The airline people love that kind of stuff!
