Ferries ran regularly when I was there. Look at the time tables and give yourself a half hour buffer. Bring passport. When I went, we had to go through passport control and received a Macau stamp.

Couple more fun touristy things to do: a) shop for gold on Macau or Kowloon; b) Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong business district; c) Temple Street Night Market.

And lastly, it was cheap to have clothes dry cleaned, and the service was exceptional.
