Is it worth updating and playing again on PS4?
I think it's fun but very flawed. It could really be amazing, particularly if you're someone who's a fan of sci-fi, Star Trek, and that sort of thing. The best example I can think of to illustrate how awesome the game can be along with how frustrating it can be is to talk about the capital ships you can get.
You eventually will come across huge transports and frigates that you can buy, land, on, enter, and even upgrade. I send a frigate out on a mission to another solar system and they warp out to their destination in real time. I can check the captain's logs on how the mission is going along the way, like I'm an admiral in Starfleet. It's awesome. The second time I send a ship out it is unable to accomplish it's mission and gets damaged, so it comes back. I land on it and realize that I have to repair it myself, which I thought was kind of neat, if not tedious. Upon trying to repair it, I discover I'm about 50 minerals short of one of the most basic elements in the game, Ferrite dust.
So, I have to go down to a nearby planet, mine some Ferrite, blast back up, and then I can repair this ship. That might seem like a minor thing, but this type scenario happens all the time. You encounter something cool, go to do the cool thing, and realize that you have to do more mindless mining before you can. The game is just always shooting itself in the foot in this way.
I still find myself occasionally jumping back into it, though.
