Been seeing a lot about the No Mans Sky updates.

I haven’t played it since launch because I hated it so much but I heard they had some big overhauls. Is it worth updating and playing again on PS4?

I think it's fun but very flawed. It could really be amazing, particularly if you're someone who's a fan of sci-fi, Star Trek, and that sort of thing. The best example I can think of to illustrate how awesome the game can be along with how frustrating it can be is to talk about the capital ships you can get.
You eventually will come across huge transports and frigates that you can buy, land, on, enter, and even upgrade. I send a frigate out on a mission to another solar system and they warp out to their destination in real time. I can check the captain's logs on how the mission is going along the way, like I'm an admiral in Starfleet. It's awesome. The second time I send a ship out it is unable to accomplish it's mission and gets damaged, so it comes back. I land on it and realize that I have to repair it myself, which I thought was kind of neat, if not tedious. Upon trying to repair it, I discover I'm about 50 minerals short of one of the most basic elements in the game, Ferrite dust.
So, I have to go down to a nearby planet, mine some Ferrite, blast back up, and then I can repair this ship. That might seem like a minor thing, but this type scenario happens all the time. You encounter something cool, go to do the cool thing, and realize that you have to do more mindless mining before you can. The game is just always shooting itself in the foot in this way.
I still find myself occasionally jumping back into it, though.

I bought it on ps4 at launch and was extremely disappointed. One of the most lackluster games I've ever played. Great idea, just not much execution.
I just got it cheap on steam and the updates definitely make it much better. However, it still doesn't do enough to capture my attention away from other games.
I'm sure I'll play it every now and then, but it will never be a game I'm hooked on.

I played it probably 80-100 hours from launch until the Next update.
I enjoyed how it used to be and maxes a lot of my shite, ship, storage, etc.
I’ve heard the NEXT update is great, but it reset a lot of my progress in terms of inventory and upgrades for my equipment and also changed a lot of the names of minerals needed for certain tasks so I was kind of turned off by it.
I only have pretty much my cash (like 12 mil of whatever the currency is), but it’s essentially useless since I can’t upgrade anything that I buy.

I never played until the NEXT update, so I don't have a frame of reference from before. I've really enjoyed it, but it does have some quality of life issues.
Like someone else said, getting stuff like Ferrite Dust is child's play, but you should be able to get it via some means that doesn't require you to go out of your way. Galactic terminal on your ship or something.
Another example is when shopping for a freighter you can't tell what type of freighter it is before you land on it.
It's been a good casual grinding came, though.
