There is no excuse for someone who has left government service to maintain a security clearance, I don't care who the hell you are or what side of the aisle you come from.

It should be government policy that any person holding high level security clearances shall be currently employed by the federal government, with the exception of people who were previously on staff or holding elected office during the transitional period of an incoming administration. You leave the federal government your clearance leaves with you. If there is some vital reason that an ex employee of the government must retain clearance then a security clearance body has to grant the extension.
