Even if the engine can pull 12k lbs, that seems a bit much for a half ton. I’d still go with the 3/4 if I’m regularly towing loads that heavy.

Same here. No way I would try and pull 12000lbs with a half ton gas burner. It would struggle heavily to pull hills and get 4mpg.
